About us

A full gospel church in Lielvārde since 1999: our history, faith, mission and values.

The Christian church “Spirit and Truth” is a full gospel church, officially registered on 30 June 1999 with the Department of Religious Affairs of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Latvia. The church’s first public service was held on 29 November 1999.

At present our church is attended by people of various age groups and members of various professions from different parts of Latvia: from Riga to Aizkraukle. They are people from Ikšķile, Ogre, Ogresgals, Glāzšķūnis, Ciemupe, Ķegums, Lielvārde, Rembate, Kaibala, Lēdmane, Ķeipene, Mazozoli, Birzgale, Skrīveri, Jumprava and so on.

The church is the people who have believed in Jesus and have devoted themselves to God to fulfil His plan on earth. More than 2,000 years ago the Son of God, Jesus Christ, by His sacrificial death on the cross redeemed all humanity from sins and their consequences; He brought all people the message of salvation and of deliverance from all kinds of powers of darkness. Yet many people today still live under the power of sin and curses, because they have not truly come to know God’s power and love. As a church we are called to help people truly know God and, through fellowship with Him, find and fulfil their God-given calling in life.

Our history

Spirit and Truth Church has a wonderful beginning of its own. Our church’s history is unique in that God, having set in motion the idea of the church coming into being, controlled every event connected with its beginning down to the smallest detail.

Although God is the founder of this church and Jesus is the head of the church, the vessel He used to establish it is Pastor Rufus Ajiboye, who was born in Nigeria.

Here is what Pastor Rufus himself says about the history of Spirit and Truth Church:

About two years before God brought my family and me to Latvia, He gave me the name for the church and planted in my heart the idea that a time would come when I would start a church in Latvia. At that point we had not the slightest wish to move to Latvia to live there permanently, let alone to start a church there. Besides, we had a wonderful church in Minsk, in the Republic of Belarus. That is why at first I thought that God wanted to change the name of the Family of God church, where I was pastor at the time, to “Spirit and Truth”. I even began to discuss this question with some of the church’s senior leaders.

Soon after that God allowed my wife and me to be refused visas to stay on and minister in Belarus, so we were forced to go to Latvia.

After we arrived in Latvia, God helped me settle into a good, well-paid job, and alongside the job I helped a local church in the town where we lived, and I wrote books.

All the time I was working in this wonderful job I had no peace in my heart; instead there was a constant sense of dissatisfaction.

When he learned of this, a good friend and teacher of mine, Pastor Sunday Adelaja, invited me to come and serve with him, suspecting that I was not in the right place.

My family and I moved to Kyiv, where for a short time I served as dean of the “Joshua” Missionary Bible Institute, which was attached to the “Word of Faith” church, now the “Embassy of God”.

All this time we still had no clear understanding of whether we were in God’s will or not. When in the end we had to settle the question of living in Ukraine permanently, and that required my wife to give up her citizenship, we decided to seek God’s will carefully before taking this step, and so we returned to Latvia again.

For seven days I shut myself in a room to find out from God what He really wanted and what His will was for the rest of our lives. It was during this time of seclusion that I clearly understood that I had to stay in Latvia and start a church here. Before I shut myself away in the room, I asked a few people to pray for me so that I could understand the next step for my life and ministry. One of them was a minister I greatly respect, Apostle Ulysses Tuff, whose spiritual oversight I was under. Amazingly, three days after my time of seclusion I received a letter from him in which he said the following:

“It is not God’s will for you to stay in Ukraine; go to Latvia and begin the ministry God is calling you to.”

After prayer and fasting, this letter became a confirmation to me that it was God’s will for us to stay in Latvia. Had I received this letter before my time of seclusion, it would have confused me, but praise God that He did not allow that. That is how we came to Latvia and began our ministry in the land blessed by God, Latvia!

I was surprised to learn later that all this time a small group of believers living in and around Lielvārde had been praying to God for a pastor. Some of them had received a revelation that I would be that person, but when we left for Ukraine they thought they had been mistaken. When we finally came back, they were very glad, and the hope awoke in them again that God was giving them a pastor. As I learned afterwards, they did not believe that I could stay in such a small town after ministering in big cities. Yet God directed me to Lielvārde. At first I thought we would start the church in Ogre, but later I understood that the Ogre district would be our Jerusalem, from where we would move further out.

After I understood that we were called to start the church in Lielvārde, I received offers to take over two different churches, with their own buildings, in two large Latvian cities; however, I knew that I had to be where God wanted to see me. One of the offers was very tempting for me, because besides the church building I was offered a four-room flat and a car, at a time when we had neither a car of our own nor a place to live.

Today we are happy that we stayed in God’s will.

Besides the revelation of where to start the church, I asked God various questions about starting the church and our ministry in Latvia. Here are some of these questions:

  • What are the purpose and tasks of the new church?
  • What are the particular features of the place where we are starting the church?
  • What must I do, and how, to fulfil my mission?
  • To which categories of people is God sending us?

After further prayer and careful study of the Holy Scriptures, I received answers to these questions. God showed me:

  • The purpose of our church.
  • The particular features of this area.
  • The categories of people God is sending us to.
  • How our mission will be fulfilled.

The particular features of the area.

God revealed to me in three ways the particular features of the local area He was sending me to:

  • Once, while I was praying, I heard these words: “The city that devours the strong.” Later I learned that at one time there had been a powerful revival in Lielvārde and the whole Ogre district, and there were very many believers here who burned for God, but most of them (especially strong leaders) either fell away or grew cold. These were demonic attacks, not chance. Satan drowned all the strong ones to put out the fire of revival that had been kindled, but God will turn this situation around and give us the most powerful revival.
  • The second way God spoke to me was through the Holy Scriptures. He gave me three key passages of Scripture that described the spiritual atmosphere of this area.

“David therefore departed from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. So when his brothers and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him. And everyone who was in distress, everyone who was in debt, and everyone who was discontented gathered to him. So he became captain over them. And there were about four hundred men with him.”

(1 Sam. 22:1-2)

Through this passage God showed me that He would draw to us people who have already been battered by life. They are oppressed people, embittered, disappointed, rejected, who are confused and live in debt. God wants to gather them and turn them into a mighty army, like David’s four hundred mighty men.

  • Isa. 49:5-10: here we can see falling away, scattering, emptiness and hunger.

All of this is meant in the spiritual sense. Through this passage God showed me that He wants to gather to Himself the sheep that have fallen away and been scattered, and to feed the hungry and thirsty souls, so that He can then spread His salvation through them.

“And now the LORD says, who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant, to bring Jacob back to Him, so that Israel is gathered to Him (for I shall be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, and My God shall be My strength), indeed He says, ‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, that You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.’ Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, their Holy One, to Him whom man despises, to Him whom the nation abhors, to the Servant of rulers: ‘Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the LORD who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel; and He has chosen You.’ Thus says the LORD: ‘In an acceptable time I have heard You, and in the day of salvation I have helped You; I will preserve You and give You as a covenant to the people, to restore the earth, to cause them to inherit the desolate heritages; that You may say to the prisoners, “Go forth,” to those who are in darkness, “Show yourselves.” They shall feed along the roads, and their pastures shall be on all desolate heights. They shall neither hunger nor thirst, neither heat nor sun shall strike them; for He who has mercy on them will lead them, even by the springs of water He will guide them.’”

(Isa. 49:5-10)
  • Ps. 107:35-38: the desert and the parched land.

Through this passage God showed me that He wants to turn the desert into a lake and dry, parched land into a spring of water.

“He turns a wilderness into pools of water, and dry land into watersprings. There He makes the hungry dwell, that they may establish a city for a dwelling place, and sow fields and plant vineyards, that they may yield a fruitful harvest. He also blesses them, and they multiply greatly; and He does not let their cattle decrease.”

(Ps. 107:35-38)
  • The third way God spoke to me was through another minister. Before the church was started, while we were praying with Apostle Ulysses Tuff, whose spiritual oversight I am under, he suddenly saw a vision: a vast, dry desert. In the middle of this desert he saw a small, withered flower. Suddenly after that he saw a tree rising out of the water, and the water began to move like a river, and the tree moved along with the water in the river. After prayer God gave him the interpretation and meaning of the vision. And he explained: “The place where you are going is like a desert where there is no life, and you are like a tree that the Lord raises up to bear fruit, while the water is the Word of God and the wisdom that will come out of your mouth. Life will come to this desert through the Word of God that you will proclaim and through the wisdom that will come out of your mouth.” And here are two passages of Scripture that the Holy Spirit gave as confirmation of this vision:

“He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth its fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper.”

(Ps. 1:3)

“Length of days is in her right hand, in her left hand riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who take hold of her, and happy are all who retain her.”

(Prov. 3:16-18)

Who are we aiming at? (Which people do we want to reach?)

What kind of people are we sent to?

You will have noticed that, according to 1 Sam. 22:1, 2; Isa. 49:5-10; Luke 19:10 and Mark 16:15, we are sent to the following categories of people:

  • To people who are embittered, disappointed, offended, broken by life. God wants to turn them into an army of salvation. God wants to set them free from bitterness, debts and offence, draw them close to Himself, and change them into strong personalities who will be able to save others too.
  • To scattered backsliders and to the religious. (Isa. 49:5) God wants to gather the scattered to Himself, bring back the backsliders and open the eyes of the religious, and make them a light, so that through them God’s salvation reaches to the ends of the earth.
  • To unbelieving neighbours, classmates, co-workers, clients, bosses and so on.

“And He said to them, ‘Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.’”

(Mark 16:15)

Each of these points is explained in more detail in the church membership booklet, which is available to everyone who has decided to attend our church membership seminar.

The church began with a small group of people who at first met in a flat to pray for the coming ministry. At the very first meeting the husband of one of the sisters repented, and to this day he keeps growing in God and serves God with his whole family. It was a time of joy, but at the same time also a time of trials, because there was no shortage of ill-wishers.

There were more and more people, but finding a place for the meetings was very difficult. Twice we met in a flat, and after that this door closed. Then twice we met in a hairdresser’s, and once we also met on the Daugava riverbank, because there was nowhere to gather: when we arrived for our meeting, the owner of the premises, without warning us beforehand, had simply decided not to let us in any more.

For a whole year we met in a bathhouse, and after that on a fur farm. Today all of that is just history, because in only these two years God has given us our own building, where we still meet and which we are still fitting out.

Time has proved that Spirit and Truth Church is born of God and is not a human invention or the product of human fantasies and ambitions. A church born of God overcomes the world, surmounts every obstacle in its path and, little by little, enters its divine destiny.

Here is what the first church members and eyewitnesses remember about the church’s beginning:

“Many of us had been waiting impatiently for a church to open in Lielvārde. It was the main subject of many believers’ prayers. God is faithful; He loves His people and answers their prayers. Pastor Rufus was sent to us in Lielvārde precisely as the answer to these prayers. God found this faithful man, who was not afraid, did not stop and did not change his mind, but stayed faithful to what God had called him to.

The beginning of the church is especially precious. At the very start we, a small group of people, met in a flat. At these meetings Pastor Rufus shared with us his vision for the new church and answered our questions, of which there were very many at the time. We were all united by a huge thirst for the Word and by gratitude to God that He had chosen Lielvārde for His blessing. The Bible says that God builds His church as the pillar of the truth and that whoever comes to know the truth will become free. We all wanted to see visible changes in Lielvārde and in people’s lives: freedom from sin, from the witchcraft that this town was so full of, freedom from the curse.

The very beginning of the church looked very modest and unattractive. The church was made up mostly of people who had been badly battered, with wounded hearts, with huge debts, with serious illnesses, with serious problems in their families. And at the start these people needed restoration themselves. God was very good to us; He did a great work in our hearts through the Word we heard at the first meetings. And the Word bore fruit. Today former debtors have not only paid off their debts but also have successful businesses of their own, creating jobs for many people. Many people have been completely healed, many people’s families have been restored today, and relationships between parents and children have changed.

We had to ‘wander’ a great deal between the different places where our church meetings were held: a hairdresser’s, a bathhouse, a fur farm, the Daugava riverbank. But in this too God was good and faithful to us: He gave us our own building. We are endlessly grateful to Him for it. Our children are with us too. The church has a Sunday school for children, where from an early age our children come to know the REAL TRUTH, which brings so much joy, peace, understanding and obedience into their lives.

God is good to everyone! God loves everyone! We are grateful to God for the whole journey we have travelled as a church. We believe that this is only the beginning of the great revival we are already witnessing.”

02

What do we believe?

Below are the foundations of our doctrine. This is what we teach about God, about Jesus, about the Holy Spirit, about the Bible, about man, about salvation, about the Trinity and about eternity.

About God

God is one, and He is the Creator of the universe; He exists eternally in three persons: God the Father, God the Son and the Holy Spirit. These three persons are equal. God is sovereign and His power is absolute.

Gen. 1:1, 26-27; 3:22; Ps. 90:3; Matt. 28:19; 1 Pet. 1:2; 2 Cor. 13:14; Phil. 2:6; 1 Tim. 3:16; 1 John 5:7

About Jesus

Jesus is the Son of God, born of a virgin, and He is equal with the Father. He lived a sinless life; He gave Himself as a sacrifice on the cross, as a perfect sacrifice for the sins of all mankind. On the third day He rose from the dead to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended into heaven in glory, where He intercedes for the church, and He will come to earth again to reign as Lord of lords and King of kings. We believe that Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life, and that no one can come to the Father except through Him. We believe that the blood of Jesus Christ is the propitiation for sin. Through His shed blood we are saved, healed and set free from bondage and from the powers of darkness.

Matt. 1:22, 23; Isa. 9:6; John 1:1-5; 14:10-30; Heb. 4:14-15; 1 Cor. 15:3-4; Rom. 1:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; 1 Tim. 6:14-15; Titus 2:13; 1 Thess. 4:16-17; John 14:1-3; John 3:31-32, 36: 14; Phil. 2:5-11; Rom. 5:9-11; Eph. 1:7; Rev. 12:11

About the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and God the Son. He is present on earth to help people come to the understanding that they need Jesus. He also lives in every believer from the moment of repentance, as a comforter, teacher and intercessor.

We believe in the baptism with the Holy Spirit as an experience, separate from repentance, in the life of every believer. Repentance comes before the baptism with the Holy Spirit. We believe that speaking in other tongues is the confirmation that a person has been baptised with the Holy Spirit. We believe in the manifestation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, which serve to encourage and build up the saints. We believe that the revelation and guidance of the Holy Spirit are available to every believer today.

2 Cor. 3:17; John 16:7-13; 14:16-17; Acts 1:8; 1 Cor. 2:12; 3:16; Eph. 1:13; Gal. 5:25; Eph. 5:18; Matt. 3:11; Acts 2:38-39; 2:4; 19:1-7; 1 Cor. 12:4-11; Acts 13:1-3; Rom. 8:14-16

About the Bible

We believe that the Bible is God’s Word to mankind. It was written by people moved by God under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the highest source of truth for faith (doctrines) and for life (behaviour). Because the Bible is inspired by God, it contains only TRUTH, without any error. We believe that the Bible is food that will sustain a person in every situation in life.

2 Tim. 3:16; 1 Thess. 2:13; 2 Pet. 1:20-21; Ps. 119:105, 160; Prov. 30:5; Ps. 12:6-7; 2 Tim. 1:13; James 1:14

About man

We believe that people are created in the image and likeness of God, to be like Him in their character as well. Man is the crown of God’s creation. Although every person has the potential to do good, all people, even the very best, are nevertheless sinners who need God’s grace. Man’s sinful nature separates him from God.

Gen. 1:27; Ps. 8:3-6; Isa. 53:6a; Rom. 3:23; Isa. 59:1-2; Rom. 3:10

About salvation

Salvation is God’s free gift to us, but we have to receive it. We will never be able to earn this gift by good works or through self-improvement. Only through faith in Jesus Christ, as the sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins, can salvation be obtained. When we hand over control of our lives to God and by faith accept Jesus’ leadership and lordship in our lives, then we receive salvation. Eternal life begins at the moment a person receives Jesus into their life. We believe that a person can lose their salvation if they do not abide in the Vine, who is Jesus.

Eph. 2:8-9; Rom. 6:23; John 14:6; 1:2; Titus 3:5; Gal. 3:26; Rom. 5:8; John 17:3; 3:3-5; 1 John 5:12; John 15:1-7; Gal. 5:5

About holy living

We believe that holy living and the pursuit of a holy life must become the goal of every believer.

The Bible teaches that without holiness no one will see God. We believe in the doctrine of holy living as a definite, though progressive, work of grace that begins at the moment of salvation and will be completed at the time of full redemption (in heaven).

Heb. 12:14; 1 Thess. 5:23; 2 Pet. 3:18; Phil. 3:12-14; 1 Cor. 1:30; 1 Thess. 4:3-7; 1 Pet. 1:13-16

The priesthood of all the saints

The Bible teaches that every believer is called to serve God at all times, regardless of their profession or line of work. We believe that every member of this church is a minister, and it is our practice to encourage every church member to find their place in ministry. Everyone has a ministry from God that no one else can fulfil. No one here wears special clothing or priestly robes, because we are all priests. We no longer need anyone to stand between us and God as a mediator. Jesus has already done that. Now all believers have equal access to God. No one in the church has an advantage over others before God, because we are all priests, and that means God answers you just as He answers me when we draw near to Him with our hearts in the right condition. As priests we are all called to draw near to Him, to testify about Him and to worship Him.

Heb. 13:15-16; 1 Pet. 2:9; Rev. 1:6

The tithe

The tithe means 10%, and it is precisely through the tithe that our church is funded. In this church we practise tithing to support the body of Christ (the church), as God has commanded. We recognise that giving 10% of our income is the biblical standard of giving. We believe that the Bible requires all members of this church to support it with their tithes and their offerings, according to how God blesses each one.

Mal. 3:10; Lev. 27:30; 1 Cor. 16:1-2; 2 Cor. 9:6-9; Heb. 7:1-8

About healing

We believe that God wants to heal and deliver today, just as He always has. We believe that by His wounds we are healed and made whole. We believe in the believer’s authority over sicknesses, over ailments, over demons, curses, and also over all the circumstances of life.

1 Pet. 2:24; Mark 16:15-18; Luke 10:19; 2 Cor. 10:4-5; Acts 5:16; James 5:14-15; Isa. 53:4-5; Matt. 8:17

About eternity

People are created for eternal existence. We will exist forever, either separated from God or with God through forgiveness and salvation. We believe in life after death.

Eternal separation from God is hell; eternal union with God is eternal life. Both hell and heaven are real places of eternal existence. A person who has died in their sins without Christ is hopelessly and eternally lost in hell, without any further opportunity for repentance.

We believe that all people, the living and the dead, will stand before God’s judgement seat. We believe that there is a resurrection of the dead, either to justification or to judgement before God, who is the Supreme Judge of the whole universe.

John 3:16; 2:25; 5:11-13; 22-29; Rom. 6:23; Rev. 20:11-15; Matt. 1:8; 2:44, 46; Heb. 9:27; Rev. 19:20; Acts 17:31; Luke 16:19-31

03

Our mission and goals

The church is a people called and set apart by God to serve Him. Besides salvation, what unites us in one big family, “Spirit and Truth”, is a divine mission to which every member of our church has devoted themselves. Thanks to the clarity of our purpose, we can all concentrate on one common cause and work together.

Our mission

To bring healing and restoration to society by leading people to God, helping them become disciples of Christ and sending them to serve in the world as agents of change.

Our mission is based on the following passages of Scripture:

“For whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved. How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? As it is written: ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!’ But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, ‘LORD, who has believed our report?’ So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God…”

(Rom. 10:13-17)

Our mission in short:

Winning souls. Discipleship. Ministry.

Our goals

01

Spirit and Truth Church exists to raise up a people who dominate for the glory of God, who exert influence and spread the Kingdom of God in various spheres of life, devoting themselves to the Great Commandment and the Great Commission.

The Great Commandment: “Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.’” (Matt. 22:37-40)

The Great Commission: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age…” (Matt. 28:18-20)

“to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities and powers in the heavenly places” (Eph. 3:10)

The key concepts of this statement:

  • Devotion: we believe that only a devoted people can have a real influence on life.
  • The Great Commandment: this is a call to receive God’s love and to express this love everywhere. Only this love can change people’s lives; only love is the right motivation for heroic action, and it is the foundation of right relationships.
  • The Great Commission: this is a call to bring God’s Word to those who have not yet come to know it, and also an opportunity to give others what changes our lives.
  • To dominate: means to take an influential place in society and to subdue the earth for God.
  • Influence in specific spheres: means that the church, as the salt of the earth and the light of the world, has a significant influence in all spheres of life. The church of Jesus Christ is not a crowd of religious people, but a union of influential personalities who, in the power and wisdom of God, bring change into people’s lives and into society.
  • The motivation for what we do: glorifying God. We live so that God may be glorified in our lives and in our country.

02

Spirit and Truth Church exists to reveal (show) God to people by exalting Jesus Christ, preaching Christ and showing His love in deeds, in order to change the negative circumstances in people’s lives and in society, demonstrating the power of the Holy Spirit.

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.

You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.

Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”

(Matt. 5:13-16)

The key concepts of this statement:

  • We are already the light of the world and the salt of the earth.
  • Salt speaks of the influence the church has on the earth.
  • Light speaks of God’s revelation and of the divine truth which, through the church, drives away all darkness and ignorance.
  • We are here to reveal Jesus to people and, in the power of the Holy Spirit, to influence the world for good.
    • By preaching the Gospel
    • By showing Jesus’ love in acts of service
    • By showing Jesus’ authority and power, in order to change life circumstances and work miracles.
  • We are here not just to survive, but to bear fruit for God
  • We are here not only to receive life, but also to give life.
  • We are here not only to enjoy God, but to reveal God to others.

03

We exist to spread the good news of God’s salvation and to make disciples who know God, reach maturity in Christ and open their hearts to serving God, in the church and in the world at large.

The key concepts of this statement:

  • To spread the Gospel: we spread the Gospel in different ways, wherever possible.
  • To make disciples: we make disciples who want to be like Jesus in everything.
  • Knowing God: through worship, and in every possible way, we want to spread the sweet fragrance of the knowledge of God everywhere.
  • Serving God in the church: expressing God’s love in deeds, we solve people’s problems, using our gifts and talents for the glory of God.
  • Serving God at work or in public places: we take God with us wherever we go, to our workplaces and to public places, so that there too we may become the answer to people’s problems.

04

We exist to preach the Gospel and, together with Jesus, to seek and save perishing souls; to help those who are saved become members of God’s family, where they can receive love, fellowship and nurture; to help members of the local church discover, develop and use their gifts and talents in serving God and others; to help them reach spiritual maturity through practical instruction; and to teach church members to celebrate God’s presence in their lives by spending personal time with God.

The key concepts of this statement:

  • We save the perishing by preaching the Gospel, which is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes.
  • We help saved Christians grow and become more mature in God.
  • We welcome God’s children into God’s family, where they can receive the love, care and instruction they need to grow.
  • We help people discover their gifts and use them for an eternal purpose.
  • We help people develop a personal and deep relationship with God.

05

To prepare a bride for Christ by helping people enter His family, develop a relationship with Him, grow and discover their potential in Christ, and live fully for His purposes on earth

06

To help people take their next step towards Christ, that is

  • To connect with Christ and with His church
  • To grow and reach spiritual maturity
  • To discover their gifts and serve God with them
  • To share their faith with others
  • To submit their lives to Christ

07

The goal of our church is, by proclaiming the wisdom of God, to destroy (put to shame) the wisdom of this world, to free people from the yoke of Satan and to release them into their God-given destiny for the glory of God.

Explanation:

  • We seek God’s glory, so we draw near to God and draw wisdom from Him
  • We proclaim this wisdom to set others free from the chains of sin and Satan
  • We teach people so that they know their destiny in God
  • By the results, we prove the foolishness of this world’s wisdom.

08

The goal of our church: to reach, include, grow and send into ministry worshippers and devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

The key concepts of this statement:

  • To reach people: evangelism
  • To include people: connecting with the local church and its goals.
  • To grow: discipleship
  • To send: releasing potential for the mission of the local church and for world mission
  • Worship and devotion: love for God

Why do we want to lead people to God?

01

Only God is the source of healing and restoration.

“Truly my soul silently waits for God; from Him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved. How long will you attack a man? You shall be slain, all of you, like a leaning wall and a tottering fence.

They only consult to cast him down from his high position; they delight in lies; they bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. My soul, wait silently for God alone, for my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defence; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory; the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. Trust in Him at all times, you people; pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Surely men of low degree are a vapor, men of high degree are a lie; if they are weighed on the scales, they are altogether lighter than vapor. Do not trust in oppression, nor vainly hope in robbery; if riches increase, do not set your heart on them. God has spoken once, twice I have heard this: that power belongs to God.”

(Ps. 62:1-11)

02

That no one should perish, but all come to repentance.

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”

(2 Pet. 3:9)

03

To follow Jesus’ example.

“…for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

(Luke 19:10)

04

To carry out Jesus’ mighty commission and fulfil His commands.

“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’”

(Matt. 28:18-20)

05

The healing and restoration of society demand it.

“When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules, the people groan.”

(Prov. 29:2)

“When the righteous rejoice, there is great glory; but when the wicked arise, men hide themselves.”

(Prov. 28:12)

“And seek the peace of the city where I have caused you to be carried away captive, and pray to the LORD for it; for in its peace you will have peace.”

(Jer. 29:7)

Other passages of Scripture:

Prov. 21:25-26; 29:7; 15:29; 12:26; Prov. 11:10-11; Prov. 10:11

06

God’s love compels us

“For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died.”

(2 Cor. 5:14)

“Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest truly is plentiful, but the labourers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into His harvest.’”

(Matt. 9:35-38)

07

It is the very best investment of your time and resources

“The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he who wins souls is wise.”

(Prov. 11:30)

“Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the firmament, and those who turn many to righteousness like the stars forever and ever.”

(Dan. 12:3)

“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who proclaims peace, who brings glad tidings of good things, who proclaims salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns!’”

(Isa. 52:7)

“And I say to you, make friends for yourselves by unrighteous mammon, that when you fail, they may receive you into an everlasting home.”

(Luke 16:9)

08

To follow the example of the early church.

“Then Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.’

And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, ‘Be saved from this perverse generation.’

Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.”

(Acts 2:38-41)

Why are many Christians afraid to witness?

01

Fear of being rejected

When people reject your message, they are not rejecting you; they are rejecting Jesus and the Word of God. Even if your message is rejected, you still have not lost, because you are walking in obedience to God. God can use your testimony, but He cannot use your sin of silence.

“He who hears you hears Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.”

(Luke 10:16)

“He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.”

(Matt. 10:40-41)

02

Fear of what friends will think.

What do your friends think of you now? You have to make a decision: either witness to them about Jesus now, or “lovingly” send them to hell.

03

And what if people laugh at me?

Jesus told His disciples that they would be persecuted.

“Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also.”

(John 15:20)

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.

Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

(Matt. 5:10-12)

04

I can’t share my faith with my colleagues.

If God has brought the people you work with across your path, then it is very important that you do everything in your power to introduce them to Jesus. You may be the only Christian who will have that opportunity.

05

I don’t know how.

That is the excuse of lazy people. There are various resources and books on how to share your faith with others. Read my article on effective evangelism.

06

Evangelism is no longer in fashion.

The message of the Gospel will never grow old and will never change, but the methods of passing it on have to change depending on the time we live in and on the people with whom we share this message.

There are two types of believers:

  • Those who talk about the unsaved.
  • Those who talk to the unsaved.

Put away your excuses. God has clearly commanded us to evangelise and has shown us how to do it. If you want to experience the tremendous joy that many believers are already experiencing, you will have to push aside all the excuses that keep you from witnessing to others about Jesus. You will have to learn to walk in obedience and to practise the Great Commission. This will not only affect the lives of your loved ones, but will also help you yourself develop a deeper relationship with God than ever before. After all, God has promised to be with you.

“So He said, ‘I will certainly be with you. And this shall be a sign to you that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.’”

(Exod. 3:12)

You will yet see what God can do with an ordinary person like you, who is obedient to God in sharing their faith with others.

Our core values

Values are the core convictions and priorities, taken from the Holy Scriptures, that determine how we act and how we reach our goals. They are not doctrines, but our doctrines shape our values. Values set the distinctive ways in which people in the church do their work and, at the same time, relate to one another. They are the essential principles that guide us in our Christian walk. A value is a filter for the mind and decides how we use our time and resources. It is not our circumstances or wishes that should decide how we spend our resources and our time, but our values. Our values are everything we stand for, the things on which we make no compromise.

Why is a clear statement of values important?

It is very important to define certain values for ourselves and for the church, because our actions usually flow from the values we really hold. As a rule, our actions are determined by our values, and not simply by what we say or write.

Conflicts often arise and plans fail because values were not defined and clarified at the start of a relationship.

Values are the foundation of our statement of purpose and of the direction of the church’s ministry.

Very often many people want to achieve a certain result in ministry, but forget that this result rests on certain values.

For example, a revelation about the importance of home groups will not bring success unless it rests on convictions and values such as:

  1. Spiritual growth happens better in small groups;
  2. God places a high value on people;
  3. Intimacy with God is the source of strength, and so on.

This is exactly what Jesus meant when He said that new wine is poured into new wineskins.

New revelations held with old values can stand in the way of results. For the revelations on this website to have a real effect on you, it is important to get to know the values they are based on.

The values of Spirit and Truth Church and the principles (actions) that follow from them

Many principles and actions follow from our statement of values. By linking specific behaviour to our values, we will be able to help everyone in the church understand and clarify for themselves what we expect.

01

A personal and deep relationship with God

John 15:1-17; Luke 5:16; 1 Cor. 1:4-9; Jude 20-21, 24-25; Mark 3:14-15; Matt. 22:37-38

Principles: Intimacy with God is the source of strength for personal renewal and for effectiveness in ministry. We believe that God wants every believer, with the help of the Holy Spirit, to have a close relationship with Him. This is the first priority of every Christian.

Actions that follow:

  • Devotion to daily fellowship with God.
    • Regular practice of the spiritual disciplines that help develop a close relationship with God (prayer, fasting, time set apart, Bible reading, and so on).
    • Regularly immersing ourselves in God’s presence to hear His voice and to offer ourselves to Him.
    • Daily examining our hearts and being filled with the Holy Spirit, so that through sincere repentance we shorten the distance between us and God.
    • Daily practice of obedience to God and removing every obstacle on the way to enjoying the Holy Spirit and His comfort.

02

The authority of the Bible

2 Tim. 3:16; 2 Pet. 1:20-21

Principles: We believe that God speaks clearly to us today through the Bible, and that the Bible contains the infallible Word of God for us and is therefore our final and only authority.

Actions that follow:

  • We will not knowingly belittle any teaching of the Bible.
  • We believe in the practical application of Bible truths to change lives.
  • We teach the Bible in order to change lives.
  • We believe in Christian education in every possible form as the church’s basic calling.
    • We practise daily Bible reading, study and memorisation to renew our minds with God’s Word and to exchange our ways for His ways and our thoughts for His thoughts.

03

People matter to God, so they matter to us too

Ezek. 18:32; Luke 15; 2 Cor. 5:14-20; Luke 5:30-32; Matt. 18:4

Principles: People are the object of God’s love, and God wants the church to carry His message of love to a perishing world. Every person matters to God, so we will receive and serve everyone God sends to us.

Actions that follow:

  • We will keep sharing the message of God’s love with people from different social groups.
  • We will not use people for programmes; on the contrary, we will use programmes to serve people.
  • We will value everyone equally, whatever their culture, language, social standing, age or financial status.

04

Small spiritual growth groups

John 13:34-35; Acts 2:42-47; Heb. 10:24-25

Principles: Spiritual growth happens better in small groups. We believe in the power of love, acceptance and forgiveness. A willing attitude of mutual submission among believers provides care and accountability and keeps a healthy sense of belonging.

Actions that follow:

  • We will willingly be accountable to a spiritual growth group for our spiritual walk with Christ.
  • We will love one another and build relationships of mutual trust and respect.

05

Equipping people for ministry

Eph. 4:11-16; Phil. 2:5-11; Ps. 133:1

Principles: People who are equipped do great exploits for the Kingdom of Heaven. We believe that when we serve others with a humble heart, we express our gratitude to God. We believe that every believer is a minister.

Actions that follow:

  • We will believe in people and mobilise them according to their gifts, abilities and calling.
  • We will help people discover their spiritual gifts and, together with others, advance the Kingdom of Heaven.

06

Strong families

Principles: We believe that strong families are the foundation of a strong church and a strong society.

Actions that follow:

  • We will purposefully serve to strengthen the families of all church members (children, teenagers, wives, husbands, and so on).

07

Cultural relevance (sensitivity)

Col. 4:5; 1 Cor. 9:19-23; 1 Chron. 12:32

Principles: To reach the people we want to reach for God effectively, our methods have to change.

The church must be sensitive to culture in order to connect with the unsaved world. Our task is to create an atmosphere in which the Holy Spirit can move on people and work in their hearts. Styles may change, but the truth, our message, stays the same.

Actions that follow:

  • We will make sure that our ministry is understandable both to people in the church and to people outside it.
    • We will keep learning about the people we want to reach for Christ, so that we understand them better and see what they dream of and what they are looking for in life.
    • We will make sure that our services make sense to believers and unbelievers alike.

08

Openness and honesty

Eph. 4:25; Prov. 29:18; Hab. 2:3

Principles: Clear and honest communication helps the church fulfil its mission. Leaders need to know where to lead the people. Honesty and openness are the foundation of true relationships.

Actions that follow:

  • Leaders will share with people where they are going, so that they can follow.
  • We will speak the truth to one another in love.

09

Multiplication

2 Tim. 2:2

Principles: Developing leaders is vital to the church’s growth and to its increase in numbers.

Actions that follow:

  • We will raise up helpers at every level.

10

Excellence and quality

Col. 3:17; Mal. 1:6-14; Dan. 5:12-14; 6:3; Heb. 11:4; Phil. 1:9-11; Eccles. 9:10; Prov. 22:29

Principles: A spirit of excellence honours and glorifies God and inspires people. We serve a God of excellence, so everything we do for God must carry a spirit of excellence, an excellent spirit.

Actions that follow:

  • We will strive for better results and better quality.
  • We will bring God a better offering and do everything we do for Him with all our heart, as for the Lord.
  • We will think creatively and treat the ministry entrusted to us with the greatest sense of responsibility.

11

Unity and individuality

1 Cor. 12:13-27; Rom. 12:3-5

Principles: We are different and each of us has an individual approach to solving the same problem, but in spite of this we are one family and children of one Father.

Actions that follow: We will focus more on what unites us than on what divides us.

12

We believe in the next generation

Mark 10:13-16; Prov. 22:6

Principles: Children are an important part of the church today and potentially the leaders of tomorrow’s revival. God wants children and teenagers to be trained, equipped and released into ministry. He wants to use them already today, and He places the hope of tomorrow on them.

Actions that follow:

  • We will intentionally lift up our children and young people and invest ourselves in them.
  • We will prepare them for future ministry.

05

Our structure

In this section we would like to introduce you to how we are organised and how any church member can take part in the life of the church.

The question of structure is a question of our church’s organisation and order, so that we can effectively achieve our mission and goal.

The Bible says that God is a God of order:

“For God is not the author of confusion but of peace.”

(1 Cor. 14:33)

Paul says that the church is the pillar and ground of the truth, where everyone needs to know how to conduct themselves.

“…but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.”

(1 Tim. 3:15)
  • Since the church, by its nature and essence, is a community and a family in which there must be room for interaction, for unity around one common goal and for building strong relationships, the whole church is divided into small groups and ministry teams.
  • Since the church is the body of Jesus Christ, which functions like any organism, each of its members does what God has gifted them to do and uses their talents, abilities, knowledge, experience and spiritual gifts for it. We do not appoint people to ministry, but encourage everyone to discover and use their gifts in serving God. The reason for this is as follows: we are not interested only in getting tasks done, but above all in the development of the person and in their fulfilment as they carry out their work of ministry.

“For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us…”

(Rom. 12:4-6a)
  • We believe that every church member is a minister and carries out specific, defined functions for building up the church. That is why the church can have as many ministers as it has members.
  • Any church member can start a new ministry. All it takes is to see a problem to which you can offer yourself as a solution, thanks to your knowledge, talent, experience or spiritual gifts.
  • Since the church is a flock, it needs a pastor’s care.

“He said to him again a second time, ‘Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?’ He said to Him, ‘Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.’ He said to him, ‘Tend My sheep.’

He said to him the third time, ‘Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?’ Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, ‘Do you love Me?’ And he said to Him, ‘Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Feed My sheep.’”

(John 21:16-17)
  • The pastor is the head of the local church, and his role is to feed, lead and protect the flock.
  • The pastor leads the church together with a team of leaders who share with him the care of the flock.
  • The pastor and his team train the church members for ministry, but it is the church members who are the ministers.

“And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ…”

(Eph. 4:11-12)

06

Why should I become a church member?

There are a number of benefits that belonging to a church gives us:

  1. It gives us a spiritual family for support, fellowship and encouragement in our walk with Jesus.
  2. It places us under the spiritual protection of God’s leaders through their prayers.
  3. It gives you the opportunity to discover and develop your spiritual gifts and talents in ministry.
  4. It gives you the opportunity to be accountable, which in turn is very important for your spiritual growth.

Why attend church, and what benefits does it bring?

“It’s my only day off” “too many hypocrites” “that’s when my favourite team plays” “I’m bored at church” “I’m not interested” “they only talk about money” “I always leave church feeling guilty” “I’ve already had enough bad experiences with churches”

Do sayings like these sound familiar? Perhaps you have thought some of them yourself, or members of your family have said something like them to you. Here are some important reasons that answer the question “Why should I come to church?”

  1. Worship helps you focus on God and prepares you both emotionally and spiritually for the events of the coming week.
  2. Fellowship gives you support and encouragement from other believers.
  3. Discipleship and other ministries in the church help you strengthen your faith by teaching you the truth of God’s Word and how to apply biblical principles in life.
  4. Evangelism helps you fulfil your life’s mission: bringing your friends and family members to Jesus Christ.
  5. It is a biblical requirement. Heb. 10:25 “…not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching.”
  6. It can protect you from falling away. Although there is no guarantee of this, people tend to stay faithful when they keep in contact with the faithful in the church and from the church.
  7. It gives spiritual support and encouragement. Acts 2:42 shows the life of the early church and why God blessed them. “…and they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.” Everything listed in this passage was a shared activity.
  8. It helps you obey the Great Commandment. Mark 12:30 “And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.” How can you love God if you do not obey Him and do not want to be with those He loves?
  9. It makes you like Jesus. Luke 4:16 says this: “So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read.” If anyone had a reason not to go to church, it was Jesus! And yet in the life of Jesus we see the habit of attending public places of worship.
  10. It shows your support for the work of the Kingdom. Matt. 12:30 “He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.” The place you attend shows your agreement with and support for that place, and the church must be your first priority, provided that the Kingdom of God is the first priority in your life.
  11. It gives you the opportunity to hear sermons from God’s Word. In 2 Tim. 4:2 the Apostle Paul commanded the young pastor Timothy to preach the Word. This means that God wants the Word of God to be heard, since he commanded it to be preached.
  12. It helps you identify with the body of Jesus Christ and experience God together with His people. 1 Cor. 12 and 14 show how important each believer is when they use their spiritual gifts. These gifts are given to build up and instruct the body of Jesus Christ, that is, the church. How can this happen if you do not go where the body gathers?
  13. It is a sign of eternal life. Attending church does not guarantee that you have eternal life, but love for the brethren is a clear sign of eternal life: “We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death.” (1 John 3:14). How can you love God’s children and show them love if you do not see them and are not with them?

What are the responsibilities of a member of Spirit and Truth Church?

01

I will protect the unity of my church

  • I will treat other church members with love;
  • I will reject gossip;
  • I will follow the church leadership.

Rom. 14:19; 1 Pet. 1:22; Eph. 4:29; Heb. 13:17

02

As a responsible church member:

  • I will pray for its growth;
  • I will invite unbelieving friends and neighbours;
  • I will warmly welcome guests and newcomers.

1 Thess. 1:1-2; Luke 14:23; Rom. 15:7

03

I will serve in my church

  • by discovering my gifts and talents,
  • by receiving training for ministry from my pastors,
  • by developing a servant’s heart in myself.

1 Pet. 4:10; Eph. 4:11-12; Phil. 2:4-7

04

I will support the testimony of my church

  • by attending it in faith,
  • by living a godly life,
  • by taking part regularly in material ministry.

Heb. 10:25; Phil. 1:27; 1 Cor. 16:2; Lev. 27:30

How can I become a church member?

If you have not yet repented of your sins, the first thing to do is:

  1. Receive Jesus Christ into your heart as Lord and Saviour through true repentance. You can do this by responding to the call to repentance at any of our services.
  2. After repentance you will need to be baptised and attend the church membership seminar, where you can get to know our values, doctrine, strategy and the responsibilities of a church member more deeply.
  3. If you feel that Spirit and Truth Church is your spiritual family, you simply need to let us know, and you will become a church member.
  4. If you are a believer who has received water baptism by full immersion and who was previously a member of another church, but you want to move to our church, we will accept you as a church member only after you receive your pastor’s blessing or consent. If needed, our office can help you arrange this process with your former church.
  5. If you are a believer who has fallen away from God, you simply need to come forward during the call to repentance and devote your life to God anew, or do it right where you are.

In any case, church membership is open to a believer born again from above (a trustworthy believer) who has been baptised by full immersion in water, has attended the church membership seminar and has signed the church membership commitment.
