The counselling III

We are talking about a model or qualities of an excellent counsellor. We are discussing principles of counselling, so that every one of us could help people with an advice or a suggestion. It is not enough to be good at teaching; it is not enough to point out all the wrong things in their lives. It is necessary to obtain the right qualities so that you can do it in an productive way.One of the ways we make ourselves qualified is to learn to listen to people, listen to their hearts and feelings; only then we can really help them.Besides, we must be ready to show the problem from a different perspective. It is not satisfactory to point out person’s problem or his or her mistakes; we must be able to highlight how his or her present lifestyle or approach to life has caused the problem.Today I would like us to look at another passage of Scripture:
«Listen now to my voice; I will give you counsel, and God will be with you: Stand before God for the people, so that you may bring the difficulties to God. And you shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and show them the way in which they must walk and the work they must do. Moreover you shall select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. And let them judge the people at all times. Then it will be that every great matter they shall bring to you, but every small matter they themselves shall judge. So it will be easier for you, for they will bear the burden with you. If you do this thing, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all this people will also go to their place in peace” (Exodus, 18:19-23).
Amazing Scripture! We see here that Jethro not only indicated the predicament to Moses, but also have very effective and sound solution. Many people are only „specialists” in pointing out the problems in other people’s lives, but they are no good in showing a way out. Jethro wasn’t one of them. Before giving any advice he had thought things through. All of us need to have the qualities he possessed.People that only indicate the problem without presenting a solution to it are not good counsellors. Before you ever step into a situation, first think what you can offer. Think about ways to help this person in a real and practical way. People need to see that you are interested not in criticizing them, but in helping them to solve the situation. If a person sees that you only want to point out the faults and mistakes, then he won’t be open to you and won’t receive your advice, even if it is good and right. For this very reason Jethro first showed that he wants to ease Moses’ burden that is doing harm to Moses’ health.Jethro wanted to make things easier for Moses. This is the purpose of every godly counsellor; that is the biblical standard for a good counsellor. Counsellor or advisor should be a person who desires to lighten the burden of a particular person’s life not just criticize or judge.God says in the Bible that He strikes, but He also binds up and heals the wounds.
«..in their affliction they will earnestly seek Me. “Come, let us return to the Lord; for He has torn, but He will heal us; He has stricken, but He will bind us up» (Hosea, 5:15- 6:1).
It is very important for you and me to learn to treat other people right. When attempting to talk to them and help them we cannot just tell what they are doing wrong; it is essential to not only point out their faults and underline their wrong understanding of things, their approach to the situation, but also to show an alternative approach and possible solution of the problem. Otherwise we will only be hurting them. As counsellors we must not worsen the situation making it harder for the people.God bless you!Tomorrow we will talk about another quality of a good counsellor.Pastor Rufus Ajiboye

  • The seed contains tremendous potential

Our attitude towards God’s Word is very important. God sends His Word into our lives so that His Word would bring to us that which we need. In order for the seed of God’s Word to grow in our hearts, the condition of our hearts is particularly important. «For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing which I sent it.» (Isaiah 55:10-11).
  • Everything that gets into God’s hands multiplies

For several days now we have been discussing the how the gift when it is used makes room for us and takes us before great people. When the gift is used it broadens our possibilities and destroys limitations. Thank God for creating us just the way we are.Dear friend, you have been given the things you need to start your supernatural ministry. Do not view your gift as being something small and insignificant. When Jesus told His disciples to feed the multitude, they argued with Him, saying: “We have here only five loaves and two fish”. I guess the disciples expected Jesus to say: «Oh, yes! Then let the people go, because we don’t have enough for everyone!» But Jesus did not say that. He managed to feel the multitude of people because one little boy gave back to the Lord the little he had.
  • How to develop a habit of prayer in our life? II

Prayer is relationships of love between a man and The God as we determined it earlier. It´s nothing else but the love of God, that prompts people to pray and spend time with Him.A desire to know Him and His will in our life is a kind of food to keep our life in prayer alive. The only way to know His will is to come to see Him and ask Him about it. This desire keeps our life in prayer alive. We have to have such desire to be able to pray continuously.
  • What are the grounds or foundations of favour? II

Through faith in Jesus Christ we become clothed in his righteousness and nature. In the our spirit we have the perfect character of the Almighty God even though we do not become perfect in our actions immediately after becoming followers of Jesus. We reflect God’s life, character and thoughts more and more in our lives to that extent to which we submit ourselves to the new nature in our spirit. Our daily submission to God’s nature and character in us is what I call practical righteousness that qualifies us for God’s favour.
  • Without forgiveness we rob ourselves both of the faith and good conscience

We can suffer shipwreck of our faith and end up in the prison with spiritual tyrants. Forgiveness makes us like our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ Who forgave us all our offenses: «Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases» (Psalm, 103:2-3).
  • How can we experience God in our life?

Studying the Bible we see God doing great feats through many people. He was able to realise His intentions using those people just due to their revelation and understanding of God´s key principles. While living in the different times, educated on a different level, belonged to the different cultures all Bible heroes basically have something in common. The secret of the success and feats they had is obvious – they knew God and interacted with Him. They experienced God´s power and His mercy in their lives. How did they succeeded? It became possible because they dedicated themselves to God. That´s exactly what God is inviting us to do.
