The counselling II

May grace and peace of the Lord be multiplied unto you, dear readers of “Daily Word for Spiritual Edification”!We started discussing the principles of counselling and important qualities that every good counsellor needs, and we began looking at the life of Jethro. When Jethro came to see his son-in-law, he saw that Moses as a leader was making some mistakes, so he decided to give him some advice. But before teaching and counselling he first listened to what Moses had to say. And we agreed that the first quality of a good counsellor is an ability to listen, not a desire to teach. If a person has not learned to listen he is not qualified to teach. Let’s look at the next passage of Scripture:
«So Moses’ father-in-law said to him, „The thing that you do is not good. Both you and these people who are with you will surely wear yourselves out. For this thing is too much for you; you are not able to perform it by yourself» (Exodus, 18:17-18).
Here we find one more quality of a good counsellor, which is the ability not only to point out the problem but also to show it from a different perspective. Jethro said to Moses that he was doing a good thing, but how he was doing it was not good enough. He also helped Moses to see the deeper issues. Before giving any advice, recommendation, instruction or suggestion Jethro first helped Moses to perceive his wrong approach to the ministry. He let Moses make out what his mistake was at the moment. Jethro let Moses discover for himself the thing that could become a source of future problems for him and the people.
«..you will surely wear yourselves out. For this thing is too much for you; you are not able to perform it by yourself» (Exodus, 18:18).
Jethro showed Moses that if the things stayed the same it could harm Moses’ health, hinder the growth of the nation, and cause many different negative consequences. He helped Moses distinguish the problem from another standpoint – God’s standpoint. This is an ability every good counsellor needs. A good counsellor should help a person to perceive his problem from God’s viewpoint. People must first notice the problem, and only then they will have any interest in solving it. Very often we do something wrong simply because we do not believe our actions to be erroneous. So one of the tasks of any counsellor is to open a person’s eyes so that he or she can discover what actually is going on in his or her life, see how God sees the situation, and realize that his or her lifestyle is causing problems. It is a very important quality that we must develop in ourselves so that we can be effective in helping others.Till tomorrow! Pastor Rufus Ajiboy

  • How to set grace free in our lives? II

The law of sowing and reaping governs how favour works. It is necessary to look at favour as a seed that must be sown. Jesus said that, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.” (Matthew 5:7).In other words, Jesus is saying, “Blessed are those who have sown favour or mercy, because they will reap favour or mercy”.Generally, the level of favour operating in your life depends on the level of the seed of favour you sow into other people’s lives. This means that I cannot expect the harvest of favour in my life until I have not sown mercy into other people’s lives.
  • God’s discipline

In order to determine whether we are being disciplined by God or we are dealing with the attack of the enemy, first we must ask ourselves some questions:§ What circumstances do I find myself in? (see Colossians, 3:17)o Am I where God wants to see me?
  • How Prophet Elisha accomplished his goal in life

Elijah was the spiritual father of Elisha. After Elisha closely observed the life of this man of God in his life and saw all the miracles that God performed through Elijah, he understood that the key to Elijah’s success was his love and total commitment to God. So Elisha desired and became hungry for the same anointing and lifestyle of Elijah his mentor. But more interestingly is the fact that Elisha wasn’t satisfied to do just what Elijah did; he craved for the double portion of Elijah’s his anointing.
  • Discipline is one of the ways how God transforms His children into the image of Jesus Christ

We can miss many important and useful opportunities in life if we underestimate what is going on in our lives. God’s discipline is one of these opportunities. Believers have a tendency to despise the discipline of their Heavenly Father. Yet in the Epistle to Hebrews The Lord is calling us to resist the wrong attitude of some believers towards God’s discipline. It says in the Bible: « My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him» (Hebrews, 12:5). The believers that are focused on comfort usually are indifferent towards the truth of God disciplining them. Some of them aren’t even bothered by their sins or irresponsibility. People like that want to be blessed by God, yet they despise God’s discipline. The Bible also tells us that punishment is profitable for us and not God.
  • Lust brings sin, and sin brings death II

Lust is excessive appetite for something. For example, uncontrollable sexual desire leads to rape, fornication, adultery and different types of sexual perversion. It can also lead to sexual illnesses, sometimes incurable. Moreover, feelings of guilt, depression, suicidal tendencies, breaking up of marriages, sufferings of children, violence, hatred and other similar things are often the result of sexual lust. Lust can also be experienced in the area of finances, drinking or eating. It all has brought pain and suffering to many people in the form of some addiction: alcoholism, drug addiction, gambling, stealing, treachery, murder etc.
