What causes tragedies in our lives at all?

Peace and grace be multiplied in your life by our Lord, Jesus Christ! I believe the word I share with you in this column strengthens you and helps you to continue your journey to life everlasting.Yesterday we started a new topic, how we can turn tragedy into triumph. God´s desire is to show you how to live your life without worrying all the time and celebrate victory after victory, regardless of everything you´ve been or going through right now. Before we elaborate this topic let´s figure out what causes tragedies in our lives at all. Many people ask me: «If God is good, why does He allow so many tears, tragedies and sorrow in this world? If it´s not His merit then where does all the evil come from? Where does a tragedy come from? What is its source?» Honest and apparently innocent people that suffer want to know why and what are they suffering for. Consecrated, true believers that seek God with all their heart, and also suffer want to know why such things happen in their lives. People of all generations have asked these questions. There is one of many examples:
«You hope of Israel, the Saviour of it in the time of trouble, why should you be as a foreigner in the land, and as a wayfaring man who turns aside to stay for a night? Why should you be like a scared man, as a mighty man who can’t save? yet you, Yahweh, are in the midst of us, and we are called by your name; don’t leave us. Have you utterly rejected Judah? has your soul loathed Zion? why have you struck us, and there is no healing for us? We looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of healing, and, behold, dismay!» (Jeremiah 14:8-9,19).
This is an essential question where and why the tragedies come from into a life of a man. Let us look up an answer in the Scriptures. The Scriptures give us a set of reasons why the Earth is filled with sufferings and tragedies today. Let´s touch the main ones.
«Let no man say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God,” for God can’t be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each one is tempted, when he is drawn away by his own lust, and enticed. Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin; and the sin, when it is full grown, brings forth death. Don’t be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow.» (James 1:13-17).
The verse above shows us where tragedies DO NOT come from. God is not the author of tragedies, He is the source of goodness and perfection. God never changes nor He has a shadow of change. He cannot be good natured today, then a tyrant tomorrow. Learn this important lesson: God is not the enemy of a man, because there is nothing evil in Him.God is not the source of our grieves, but the opposite, He is the answer and the solution of our problems. If we get closer to God, then regardless of what kind of situation we are going through in our life now – either a tragedy or a grief – we can always find help and strength in Him to have a victorious life abundantly in this wicked world. We´ll continue tomorrow.Be blessed!Rufus Adjiboje, pastor

  • The changes must start with us

«When I was young my imagination did not know any boundaries. And I wanted to change the whole world. In time I realized that I wouldn’t be able to change the world, so I tried to change my country. When I realized that I wouldn’t be able to change the country, I concentrated on changing my city. But I couldn’t change my city either. So, when I had grown older, I tried to change my family. Now when I am an old man waiting to cross over to the other side I have understood that the only one I could change was me. Suddenly I realized that if I had worked on changing myself I would have been able to really affect my family and then my family and I could have affected the city. Through the changes in the city we could have changed the country and the world”.
  • Value God’s Word!

Today God wants to tell us the same thing. The Word of God is life to us. When God sends us His Word, He offers us life. Rejecting the Word of God we reject life itself. Moses says about God’s Word: «For it is not a futile thing for you, because it is your life…»It is extremely important for us to appreciate the Word of God and not to treat it as something futile, – it is not like a song that we have listened to and then gone to do our own will. It should be to us like the greatest treasure. We have to value God’s Word, to hide it in our hearts, to appreciate it because it is life to us. God says that through the Word and through our right attitude towards it we can extend or prolong our days. Our attitude toward the Word determines whether we will extend our life or shorten it.
  • The conclusion about potential benefit from hardship, painful times and problems

*) We talked about how God uses our pain and problems for our spiritual growth; *) We talked about the fact that there is benefit in our times of hardship. Problems and pain focus our attention as nothing else does. They teach us to lean on God, they test and refine our faith, form our character, prepare us for eternity and Problems give us a chance to obtain the necessary experience for ministry to other people. *) We talked about the importance of making right choices, because if we do not make the right choices, times of hardship by
  • Seek first to do that which is the will of God in all your decisions

If you fear God, the first thing you consider in any decision you make is: “What is God’s will in this matter? What does God say about this issue?” The first question you ask in hard times should never be “How hard is it going to get doing what I am doing” BUT RATHER what is God’s will in this matter?
  • Changes always come from praying!

We talked about Hannah who did not give up even though she was barren and was being humiliated by other people; she kept on believing God and trusting that He would send her a miracle into her life and give her a baby. She did not plunge into despair and sense of helplessness, but daily brought her needs before God in fervent prayer.
  • In our lives we must reflect the life, the power and the nature of Christ III

Our ministry is to be the salt and light to our society. God has granted us this ministry, but not because we are better than others. God gave us this ministry because of His mercy. Now as the recipients of God’s mercy we do not have any right to condemn those that do not know God and live under the power of the prince of darkness. God is sending us – His children — into the world to spread the light and reconciliation. While doing this ministry, we should not lose heart; we should not allow anything to stop us. We must be courageous and go forward enduring sorrows as good soldiers of Jesus Christ.
