The counselling

Dear friends, I bless you on this day and pray that the Lord would prosper the work of your hands. May He help you fulfil your dreams and reach your goals.Today I would like to share a word about counselling people and I would like to base the principles of counselling on the life of Jethro.Every one of us tries to help people by giving advice or recommendations. There are moments in life when we want to reveal certain truths to people so that they could make right choices. Every one of us needs counsel and guidance. It says in the Bible:
«Without counsel, plans go awry, but in the multitude of counsellors they are established» (Proverbs, 15:22).
But it is crucial to understand that giving of advice and counselling needs to happen in a proper way, because it will determine whether people accept our help or not, whether they will be helped or we will worsen the situation.
«So when Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he did for the people, he said, “What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit, and all the people stand before you from morning until evening?” And Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God. When they have a difficulty, they come to me, and I judge between one and another; and I make known the statutes of God and His laws» (Exodus, 18:14-16).
In this passage of Scripture we can see what Jethro’s attitude was towards Moses. He had enough wisdom to first ask Moses about the meaning of his activities. A wise counsellor or advisor must be someone who has learned to listen to others. Jethro did not rush into giving advice to Moses until he obtained a fuller understanding of the essence of things and the core of the problem. Jethro wanted to get to the bottom of things; that is why he first gave Moses an opportunity to speak. He did not start teaching Moses right away about the proper and more effective way of dealing with people. The first thing a true counsellor will do is to turn listening ears to people who have found themselves in difficult situation, discern their hearts and feelings and try to understand the nature of their problems. And only afterwards he would try to give some advice. That is why today I would like to ask some important questions to those who want to help people: Are you good at listening? Do you have a desire to first understand a person’s heart, hear the cry of his or her soul, and understand his or her pain and suffering, before teaching or counselling them? May be you are moved by just one desire – to lecture everyone about everything? If that’s the case with you, then you won’t be able to help anyone and people will not feel free to reveal their problems and needs to you. Tomorrow we will continue on the topic and will learn another important quality of a good counsellor.Be blessed! Pastor Rufus Ajiboye

  • Discipline is one of the ways how God transforms His children into the image of Jesus Christ

We can miss many important and useful opportunities in life if we underestimate what is going on in our lives. God’s discipline is one of these opportunities. Believers have a tendency to despise the discipline of their Heavenly Father. Yet in the Epistle to Hebrews The Lord is calling us to resist the wrong attitude of some believers towards God’s discipline. It says in the Bible: « My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD, nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him» (Hebrews, 12:5). The believers that are focused on comfort usually are indifferent towards the truth of God disciplining them. Some of them aren’t even bothered by their sins or irresponsibility. People like that want to be blessed by God, yet they despise God’s discipline. The Bible also tells us that punishment is profitable for us and not God.
  • God changing us through discipline

I believe that discipline is one of God’s tools that help us to change and achieve effectiveness in our personal lives and ministry. Every one of us has a dream or a goal for our lives. But however good or grand these plans or desires are, discipline is a necessary prerequisite for these things to come to pass. Many ideas and desires never come true because people lack discipline.
  • The importance of unity

This Scripture tells us that the people had one goal, they had one language, and they put forth a unified effort, and it says about them that “now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them”. God said that because of their unity they would be successful in everything that they do. In the Bible God often speaks to His people about unity. Unity is a very important key that allows us as God’s people or the Church to fulfill the will of God and our calling in this earth.
  • You cannot multiply what you do not sow

We are still talking about necessity to use the gifts that have been given to us by the Lord. Jesus wants every person to be faithful in little things and then God will place such a person over greater things. God presents everyone with opportunities to start serving Him and bringing forth fruit for God’s Kingdom. You cannot multiply what you do not sow.In the Gospel of Mathew Jesus told a parable about Master giving his servants different talents.
  • Jesus came to fill the Earth with His glory

Jesus didn´t come into this world to die on the cross so that people become religious and indifferent to God. Contrariwise, Jesus came to fill the Earth with His glory just like rivers fill the seas. Jesus set an example of what we have to do. Wherever Jesus showed up He stirred the place! Everywhere He showed up people responded to His visit both positively and negatively. Some of them said: “Watch the Messiah, He is the answer, He is the son of God!” while the others stated: “He is obsessed by demons, He is a sinner, blasphemer, He is dangerous, so He must die”.
