How to develop a habit of prayer in our life? IV

Greeting to you all, my dear readers, and welcome to our column “Daily Word for Spiritual strength!” I pray to the Lord for each of you, so that you are always thirsty for the Word of God, His wisdom and fellowship with Him, since He is the source of life.

Jesus said :

“ … for apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)

Prayer unites us with our Heavenly Father, helps to know the depth of the His heart, His love and His plans for our life.

Do you remember Daniel? He was a man of God, similarly to David, one, whose attitude to prayer and fellowship with God was very serious. In Daniel 6:10 we read:

«When Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house (now his windows were open in his chamber toward Jerusalem) and he bowed down on his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did before».

We know this story. There was a law recently adopted at that time that for thirty days nobody was allowed to pray to any god. The law had been signed by the king, so every person who broke that law could receive a harsh punishment. Ever before the law was adopted Daniel had already form a habit of praying three times a day. Therefore, to stop doing what he had been doing daily for a long time was extremely difficult to him. It was a very useful habit, indeed.

Do any of you have such a habit? You´ve been told to stop, but you continue just because it´s your habit. Daniel was had the habit of praying to God three times a day. Whatever the circumstances, he just kept doing it. Neither David nor Daniel ever made an excuse like: “ I stopped practicing prayer because of my many problems, my unpleasant circumstances and severe rules of this country, I am going through a very difficult time now”. Surely they didn´t say that. Why? Because prayer had become their habit, a part of their life.

Remember, your character is the sum total of your habits. Your behavior is a composition of a set of habits. Having prayer as your natural reaction to every little thing in your life, you will pray even when you are forbidden to do so. In such case you simply can´t prevent yourself from doing that. Some Christians bless food each time they have meal at home, but abstain from doing so outside their home when their with other respectable people. What does this tell us about them? Such behaviour is a hint to us that praying over their food is has not become a habit to them. Habit is something you can´t stop doing. Habit manifests as your natural reaction everywhere – at a party, in a restaurant, on a business meeting. Once praying has become your habit you practice it everywhere, regardless of the people around you and of what they think about it. As we have noticed, David and Daniel, both had such habit, they found the time for it on daily basis.

According to the culture of Jewish people by the time when Jesus came to the Earth they all had form the habit of praying three times a day. Even though, many people, especially Pharisees turned their prayers into mere religious ritual, it became a routine for them by that time. That´s why Jesus reprimanded them for such approach, while teaching the others not to follow the Pharisees deeds. Pharisees had a rule of fasting two times a day and a rule of praying three times a day, but those rules were not written in their hearts nor do they did that with love for God. Once again I want to remind you that praying without love for Our Creator is not prayer at all, it is rather a formal and dead, ritual that produces no changes in your life. Prayer is a love relationships man and God

«If I speak with the languages of men and of angels, but don’t have love, I have become sounding brass, or a clanging cymbal..» (1 Cor.13:1).

May the Lord bless you today!

See you tomorrow!

  • God is more interested in your spiritual growth, development of your character than a quick answer to your prayers!

It would not be hard for God to give you what you are asking for; it is a lot harder to cause changes in you and your character. Humans tend to be so ungrateful. The people of Israel were wandering through the desert; they called out to God, He answered them, but it did not change them. Afterwards, when a different problem came they called out to God again, and He answered them and gave what they had asked for. Nevertheless, their hearts remained unchanged. God can answer your prayers again and again, but it is not a guarantee of permanent changes in your life. Quite often God allows certain situations in our lives that help us to grow spiritually.

  • What are you doing with your promotion? II

If you want God to exalt you, you need to love God and love people. God exalts the loving hearts. Love God and love your neighbour – these are two main commandments. All of your knowledge won’t bring any results, if you forget these two most important commandments. You probably have noticed that God does not answer all prayers. There are some prayers that God does not pay attention to; it happens when we break two most important commandments – to love God and to love your neighbour. Love towards God and people around you are the very power that must rule us and lead us through life. Love towards God and people that is demonstrated in deeds and not in words brings us to the place where promotion from God is possible.

  • Spiritual discipline

The paradox is that most Christians, who discipline themselves in other areas of their life in order to be successful – like job or carrier, do not believe they need to be disciplined in the area of godliness. We are talking about good Christians who are faithful members of the Church of the Living God. These are people who love God’s Word and often are very enthusiastic about the work of God. But because of the lack of discipline they do not reach their potential in God’s Kingdom.

  • Lay hold on eternal life! II

«But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses» (1Timothy, 6:11-12).We say that these three things help us to lay hold on eternal life. We also established that eternal life has its beginning on earth when we get to know the only true God and His Son Jesus Christ.

  • Cooperation with God

When we continually pray and worship God, then our main desire is doing the will of God. Many prayers remain unanswered by God, because these prayers have a wrong foundation and demonstrate wrong priorities. For example, you may pray for a person with some serious problems. And you ask God to remove his or her problems or to solve them. At the same time you know that even if the answer to this prayer comes, the problems might return, since the cause of them has not been removed. That is why when Paul prayed he always asked for the people to learn the will of God and have a desire to do His will and be fruitful.
